I’m a mom learning to balance my family, faith, and writing career.

Resurrection Eggs

Mary asked me specifically what were in the Resurrection Eggs. So I’ll do a little more explaining because they’re my favorite part of our Easter celebration. Usually we open a few eggs during the week, but since we’ll have relatives at our home for Easter for the FIRST TIME EVER, we decided to wait until they come. Okay, and life has been a bit busy with baseball and other stuff that we haven’t had a chance to be together much as a family this week!

The contents of the 12 eggs  tell The easter story.

The first egg contains a Donkey (Triumphal Entry)
Second: Three Coins (Juda’s Blood money)
Third: a Cup (Last Supper)
Fourth: Praying Hands (Garden of Gethsemane)
Fifth: Leather Strip (Jesus’ trial and 39 lashes)
Sixth: Crown of Thorns (Mocking of Jesus)
Seventh: Nails (Crucifixion)
Eighth: One Die (Gambling for Robe)
Ninth: Spear (Piercing Jesus’ side)
Tenth: Gauze (Grave Clothes)
Eleventh: Stone (Tomb and the stone rolled away)
Twelfth: Empty Egg ( Jesus’ Resurrection)

These eggs are very easy to make, in fact my kids each made one in homeschool co-op last year. If you can’t fing the little items, you can cut out little photos of each item, but many of the contents are easy to find.

The wonderful thing about the store bought Resurrection Eggs is that it comes with a little booklet and story for EACH Egg! Now that I think of it, it’s probably a good idea to do the eggs over a two week time. And I noticed something else in the booklet for the first time. It has a section “how to lead a child to Christ” and in the back it gives alternative items for eggs to tell the story like a palm branch for the triumphal entry and a small piece of soap for when Jesus washed the disciples feet. I might just have to move my Resurrection Eggs to an 18 count egg carton and add some of these items next year!
