No Time for Doubt

Gina Conroy’s thought provoking poll won’t leave me alone this week. Here’s her Q, followed by three choices:

“What is your top writing interruption?”

“Job. Family. Procrastination/Self-doubt.”

No surprise that over 50% of the votes go to the voices in our head telling us we can’t do it, or that we don’t have time. I confess. All year I’ve been blaming my lack of writing productivity upon homeschooling, volunteer activities, etc. My claim of being too busy to focus on plots and pretend people has become a reassuring mantra of sorts, my way of welshing without the guilt.

What’s opened my eyes? Well, my living-room-turned-gym could be responsible. Recently my husband and I invested in a Total Gym and a Gazelle, and suddenly, I’m finding at least forty-five minutes each day to work out. Hmm…

Maybe I’m not too busy. I mean, we can always find time for things that are important to us, right? So Gina’s poll really sticks it to me. Am I willing to go for it or not? What are my underlying reasons for pulling back on this dream?

More importantly, how does God want me to prioritize my daily routine? In the midst of my self-doubt am I as the ‘wilderness generation’, content to wander from one task to the next without pursuing God’s best for me and mine?

If I can find time for daily exercise, then how hard could it be to prioritize daily Bible reading, or writing time for my WIP?

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

Time is precious. We had yesterday, and we have today. Tomorrow is God’s. He is our ultimate Editor. Are we using His time wisely?

From the day I received my first diary in the second grade, I've had a passion expressing myself through writing. Later as a journalist and novelist, I realized words, if used powerfully, have the ability to touch, stir, and reach from the depths of one soul to another.
