Gracie’s First Day of Kindergarten

Last Thursday was Grace’s first day of Kindergarten. The night before she woke up at 2 am and climbed in bed between me and hubby. She hadn’t done that in a couple of weeks or so. Then when she woke up she wasn’t hungry. I asked her if she was excited about kindergarten. She said, “Yes, mom. I’m a little ascited!”

kindergarten003.jpgWe rushed out the door to make it to school by 9:15, and took the traditional photos with her backpack, and teacher. She had no problem going into class, but was a little silly when she took her picture with her teacher.kindergarten005.jpg

Around 11am I realized I forgot to pack her folder and supply box. I was on the way to meet a friend for lunch, but decided to turn around. The thought of Grace being the only one with her supply box (which we had for weeks!) made me sad. So I dropped a note in the box with a drawing of me and her holding hands. I wrote “Mommy Loves Grace!”

My lunch plans were messed up, not because of my forgetfulness, but because my friend got tied up at an appointment. Then before I knew it, I had to pick up the boys at 1:30 from school. After unloading groceries I was off to get Grace.

When I picked her up, she gave me a big hug and kiss and was happy to see me. I asked her about her day. She said her favorite thing was playing in the gym. Then she said, “My other favorite thing was playing in the park and playing blocks with the girls.”

She said she made a friend, “Lucy, with red hair.” That should be easy for me to remember since I’m an I LOVE LUCY fan!

Grace really enjoyed kindergarten, and I had no trouble letting her go. I guess since she’s my fourth and will only be gone 2 times a week, it wasn’t such a big deal.

Yet, I had to know what she liked better, Mom or kindergarten. I know, I know I shouldn’t have asked, and I wouldn’t have if I had known her answer in advance.

Grace said matter of factly, “I like you both.” So I repeated the question, hoping she’d lean in my favor. “I said I like you both!” she repeated.

And I wasn’t hurt. I was glad. I want her to enjoy school. It sure beats having to pry her off my neck.
