Saturday Morning Review: Nobody by Creston Mapes
What do you get when you take an ambitious reporter out for a story and a murdered homeless man with a surprisingly large amount of money in his pocket?
You get NOBODY!
Through one rash decision, Hudson Ambrose is faced with his own human degradation while seeking out the truth about this much -loved, mysterious homeless man.
Who was Chester Holte? Why was he homeless? And just how many lives did he touch while living on the streets? Those are some of the answers Hudson searches for, but the answers he gets are full of twists and surprises as he meets and talks with other homeless people. Those who really knew Chester. But when his new friend and possible love interest is threaten by her ex-boyfriend, Hudson’s role goes from reporter to protector. But will his digging into Chester’s life find the answers he’s looking for or end up getting himself killed?
Written in first person, NOBODY hooked me from the very first sentence and wouldn’t let go. Creston Mapes’ story is fresh and through his creative use of backstory, I was able to get to know the dead man and the lives he touched while he was living. At first, I got hung up on the first person POVs used for the secondary characters, but that was easily overlooked once I got into their heads and saw Chester Holte through their eyes..
Not only will NOBODY keep you turning the page, it will challenge your faith and make you think twice about passing the homeless man on the corner. I highly recommend NOBODY. It was my first Creston Mapes novel, but it won’t be my last. If you’d like to read it for yourself buy it today!
