Count Your Blessings
God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough.
There are no boundaries to his greatness.
Generation after generation stands in awe of your work;
each one tells stories of your mighty acts.
Your beauty and splendor have everyone talking;
I compose songs on your wonders. Your marvelous doings are headline news;
I could write a book full of the details of your greatness…
God gives a hand to those down on their luck,
gives a fresh start to those ready to quit.
Psalm 145: 3-14 The Message
Do you ever get stuck as a writer? You stare at a blank page not sure what to write next. The topic or words won’t come. Frustration sets in. You are ready to quit. If you find yourself in this situation, you might do well to remember the words of the old hymn “Count Your Blessings.”
“So amid the conflict whether great or small, Do not be discouraged God is over all. Count your many blessings Angels will attend, Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Count your blessings Name them one by one. Count your blessings See what God hath done. Count your blessings Name them one by one. Count your many blessings See what God hath done.”
~Johnson Oatman Jr.
If you aren’t sure what the next word is you should pen to the page, turn to “The Word.” David reminds us in Psalm 145 that God’s deeds are worthy of songs, headline news, and entire books of details. Take a break from whatever project you are working on and write about the wonderful things God has done in your life. Count your blessings. Write them down one by one.
You may just find yourself renewed and ready to write again. You will experience God’s hand extended, giving you a fresh start.
