Night Watchman: A Must Read for Mystery, Police Procedural Lovers

I finished the book this week and I just loved it. I loved the premise, the voice, the writing… I loved the cynical, grumpy, handicapped retired cop! What a great idea for a character! Too many times the hero or cop is strong and handsome and well, your typical hero. But not Ray Quinn, who retired after his partner was killed and he was left for dead and is now practically crippled working as a night watchman at an apartment complex in Orlando. Mark Mynheir knows how to write this type of character and his expertise as a homicide detective shines through in this book!

The mystery was satisfying, though a little too procedural in the middle for me, but it made me feel like I was a homicide detective on the case and not everything they do is full of excitement. How glamorous is digging through trash? But the story kept me guessing and I was pleasantly surprised by the “villain.” Mark planted the clues any good homicide detective could pick up on and I wasn’t frustrated when I couldn’t pick out the perp. Of course, YOU may catch on earlier than I did, but Night Watchman was a satisfying read with an ending that makes me think we haven’t seen the last of Ray Quinn and his quirky sidekick Crevis Creighton! And I’m glad!

ABOUT:

Ray Quinn is a tough, quick-witted homicide detective in love with his partner, Trisha Willis. She gives Ray something to live for—something to hope in. Until a barrage of bullets leaves Trisha murdered and Ray crippled.

Struggling with his new physical disability and severe depression, Quinn turns to whiskey, scorn, and a job as a night watchman to numb the pain. But when a pastor and dancer are found dead in an apparent murder-suicide, the

pastor’s sister approaches Quinn for help.

Reluctantly, Quinn takes the case and is plunged into the perilous Orlando. Soon he discovers that, not only was the pastor murdered, but the case may be linked to his and Trisha’s ambush. Torn between seeking revenge or responsibility, Quinn is thrust into the case of his life.
