The Silent Gift by Michael Landon, Jr.
                                      and Cindy Kelley
When I was offered a chance to read and review The Silent Gift by Michael Landon, Jr and Cindy Kelley, my first thought was “what was the book about and did it have inspirational content.” My second thought (being a writer) was “how did the collaboration work? And who really wrote it?” When I discovered the book was published by Bethany House and after learning about Michael Landon, Jr.’s faith, my reservations disappeared. (Don’t miss my interview with Michael Landon, Jr. coming soon and a chance to win a copy of Th Silent Gift!)
Then I cracked open the book and was riveted by the fast-paced, intense first chapter that left my heart racing and me holding my breath. Once into the story it was easy to see the “women in danger” theme, but this one had a twist. Set in 1938, it chronicles a mother’s journey to protect her deaf/mute son (who to me seemed autistic) from her abusive husband and society in general. At times the story seemed episodic and situations were too convenient to the plot with no real surprises except for that first chapter. Though the unique, prophetic like gift of the boy was intriguing, it felt like the spiritual thread wasn’t woven as tightly as I had hoped, (being a writer myself, those things stood out to me more and wouldn’t to an average reader,) but the story still held my attention. In the end, the conclusion was satisfying and in typical Landon fashion, made me tear up.
So overall, I give this a worthwhile read, and you’re in luck. I have two copies to give away. One copy will go to someone who leaves a comment here. And the other, after commenting on my interview. Just leave your name and email, and I’ll drawing a winner at the end of the week!
