Writing as a Sandwich Generation Granny Nanny
Do you have a goal to be a writer but find that caring for elderly parents and other caregiving needs keep getting in your way? I know that feeling well. I remember sitting in bed, finishing up a great Christian romance and praying for God to help me write well enough to encourage others, just as this author had done. Then I was pounced upon by a 5 year old and off I went to another day of raising children and writing grocery lists instead of books.
Now, as a baby boomer granny nanny who is also caring for elderly parents, I’m still staying busy but with a difference. Two years ago, after much prayer, I committed to starting that writing career I’d been putting off for 30 years. I opted to start with blogging and loved it! Even with a strong computer user background, it’s been a major learning curve as I learned bits and pieces of html and css. By the grace of God, I’ve pressed on and 2.5 years later, I’ve written a post on my blog every single day, along with quite a few articles at other sites.
While I’m thrilled at how much easier it is to do all this than if I had started 30 years ago, I have to say, I wish I had taken the plunge much sooner. Even if I had only written one hour a day during my children’s nap times, I’d be so much further ahead than I am now.
Then again, God has called us to be content with where we are. So I’m praising Him for what I’ve accomplished in the past two and a half years, and continuing to write and learn and share. It’s not easy. Caring for elderly parents and grandkids can be very time intensive, especially when one or more are ill. Through it all, though, I’ve learned some good tips and tricks to help me keep writing in the midst of the interruptions and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you here.
