Packing What You Need
“Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.” Genesis 22:3 NIV
When I was younger I thought I knew what my life was going to be like. I chose a career, picked a great man to marry, and started climbing the ladder of success. For years everything was going great and I thought we were on target for what I had envisioned. Then the recession hit.
It wasn’t that bad a first. We made some adjustments and figured we would hunker down and weather the storm. But I never figured the storm would last this long, did you?
When Abraham was tested by God he probably never thought he would have to see it to completion. However, with no hesitation he packed what he needed for the journey and set out to weather the storm.
We all experience times of testing in this journey we call life and often our testing falls in the category of sacrificing our plans and dreams. Our troubles could come from the down economy, a broken relationship or an illness but the result is the laying down of our expectations. When trials intersect our journey will we pack what we need with no hesitation?
Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” When we hit times of testing and we don’t know who we are in Christ or the place of victory that we fight from, we are in danger of being overtaken by our circumstances.
Abraham knew that God could be trusted. He didn’t know what, when, where, or how… but he knew God. Today I have no idea how the rest of my life is going to end up, but because I’ve spent time packing what I need, (i.e. studying His word); I know that He is trustworthy even when I can’t see how things will work out. Are you packed with what you need?
Lord,
I don’t know what the future holds, but I know you. Help me Father to live each day by Abraham’s example of complete trust in knowing that you will provide just what I need when I need it.
Amen
