Learning to say no

by Ron Estrada

No, it’s not another lecture on the evils of drug abuse. I’m referring to something most of us are afflicted with: the “I’ll do that!” syndrome. It’s common among Christians especially. When the Pastor or a member of the church stands up front and asks for help with the church fundraiser, your hand shoots up. When the school needs someone to pop popcorn every Wednesday for the kids, you’re there. You volunteer for everything you can get your mitts on. And then, about once a week, when you’ve got a chance to sit at the computer, you whip out a paragraph of your upcoming best-seller.

Here’s something we all learn the hard way: learn to say “No.” My wife and I have a little joke. When we sense an upcoming volunteer drive, we remind each other to answer with “I’ll pray on it.”

It’s only half joking, really. We always talk about what we’re called to do. Funny thing is, most of us seem to be called to just about everything. I must be God’s right-hand man. Oh wait, that spot’s taken. Okay, maybe I’m His forefinger or thumb. Naw, don’t think so.

If you’re called to something, I think He expects you to focus on your calling. Yes, He wants you to be giving of your time, money, and talents, but not even Peter allowed a detail like bussing tables get in the way of his ministry. Why do you?

Besides all that, every time you’re busy with something else, you’ve got less time to spend with Him. Don’t you hate it when your teenagers are too busy to tell you about their day? Then how do you think your Creator feels when you can’t spare a moment?

So do yourself a favor. Say “no.” Practice in front of a mirror if necessary. There’s hope for you yet.

Now, it’s a beautiful spring day. Why are you on your computer?!?

From the day I received my first diary in the second grade, I've had a passion expressing myself through writing. Later as a journalist and novelist, I realized words, if used powerfully, have the ability to touch, stir, and reach from the depths of one soul to another. Today as a writing and health coach, I inspire others to live their extraordinary life and encourage them to share their unique stories.
