Word Count and Counting

I’m at 17,717 words on my cozy mystery which should end up being close to 70,000. I’m making slow progress, but at least it’s progress. I took the advice of Randy Ingermanson and allowed my self to be bad.

My last couple of chapters have been bad! But at least the skeleton of the story is there, at times I’ve even resorted to telling! GASP! But I know I can go back and fix it later.

Last night I wrote a couple hundred words, but something didn’t feel right. I went back and checked my GMC for the scene (goals, motivation and conflict). It just wasn’t there. It’s a dinner scene and I was trying to get all seven people noticed in the scene in at least a small way, but it seems to be taking up too much room. There is some tension with a rebellious teenage son, but not enough to keep the story going, yet. My thoughts are to scrap the scene or tell about the people and get on the the meatier stuff that needs to happen. Or skip it and get back to it. Any thoughts?
