Grown-ups Get Scared Too

A few Sundays ago I taught in Children’s Church. We’re currently teaching a series on the life of David.

My lesson this week was on a time when David got scared. He was sure Saul would eventually track him down and kill him. Forgetting God’s promise, David took his 600 men and their families and fled to Philistia to live among his enemies and hide from Saul.

I asked the children if they’ve ever been scared and, of course, every hand in the room went up. Then one precious little girl raised her hand and asked, “Do grown-ups ever get scared?”

Yes, little one, grown-ups get scared too. There’s lots of big bad ugly things in this world that scare even grown-ups. I didn’t tell her all that, of course, but I was thinking it.

If you read the story about when David fled to Philistia you’ll see that because of that fear David made some pretty foolish decisions and it nearly cost his men their families. But once again, as always, God proved Himself faithful and came to David’s aid just in the nick of time.

Do I get scared? You betcha. Cancer is a downright scary thing, full of uncertainty and lots of big uglies. But I know God is faithful and I know I must place myself and my future in His hands. There’s only so much I can do and then it’s out of my control. Depending on your perspective, that can be a scary thought or a very comforting thought. I choose comforting.
