Poured Out Love

ShoShone Falls located in Idaho towers thirty-six feet higher than Niagara Falls, and the sight is amazing. The water flows around a bend in the river, rushes and cascades over several layers of huge, jagged rocks, and drops 212 feet. A spray rises into the sky and at the bottom is a beautiful rainbow.

Standing in the mist, listening to the roar of the water, viewing the beauty and wonder of it all, I visualized God’s love pouring down on His children. Romans 5:5 says God has poured out His love into our hearts. Not just trickling, but gushing, limitless love.

And with that thought, if God is love, why is there suffering? I have friends unable to move from their beds or couches, locked in agonizing pain and various stages of illness. Other friends have suffered terribly at the hands of others. The world is an absolute mess with an abundance of suffering. With human eyes, all I see is water smashing against rocks and the foam of turmoil. I don’t see the rainbow at journey’s end.

I don’t always see the layers that Paul talks about in Romans 5:3-5. “…that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” (Romans 5:3-5 NIV).

I can’t see the ending—yet.

John Eldridge in his book, Epic writes “One day soon we will round a bend in the road, and our dreams will come true. We really will have happily ever after. The long years in exile will be swept away in the joyful tears of our arrival home. Every day when we rise, we can tell ourselves. My journey today will bring me closer to home; it may just be around the bend. All we long for, we shall have, all we long to be, we will be. All that has hurt us so deeply will be swept away.”

Hold on my friends, life can be a bumpy, wild ride, but hope doesn’t disappoint. God is pouring out His love. Not just a tiny misting. We are talking, all out, thundering, awe-inspiring, pain and illness removing, past restoring, sin cleansing, eternal,
