No More Excuses! Just Write It!

After ACFW conference I thought I was ready to dig back into my WIP and pound out the words. But I wasn’t. Before sending off my proposal, my agent suggested I make a few changes, and so I dove into editing, again. Vacation hit right in the middle of editing and when I got back, well, there was getting back into the routine of life and finishing the edits.

As if that wasn’t enough to distract me, I’m deep in the middle of marketing for my novella coming out in January and there’s this blog to keep up. Exucses, excuse, I know!

Today I really intended to write, but it’d been so long since I was in this story world I couldn’t remember where I was headed. So I read over the last two chapters. While I know the over all big picture, I’m not much of a scene planner, plus it takes time for me to emotionally engage in the scene.

Yeah, I know, all excuses. So what’s my deal? Am I afraid to start writing again? And why would I rather spend my time on social marketing and blogging, then working on my WIP?

The easy answer is that writing is HARD!! And right now I don’t want hard, I want easy. Blogging and facebook and social media are easy and the rewards are usually immediate. Drafting press releases, while challenging, has a foreseeable end. It’s something I can check off my list in a week’s time.

But ALL the social media, marketing and press release writing is USELESS if I don’t finish the book!! I’m sure there’s deeper procrastination issues to explore like “can I really do this?” or “am I just fooling myself and the world into thinking I can ever be good enough??” But spending anymore time dwelling on the WHYs is just another way I can procrastinate.

So what will I do? Quiet the distractions, make a plan for the next scene, and just write it! Today is my writing day! Feel free to leave a comment and ask me how many words I’ve written so far!

No more excuses for me or YOU!

From the day I received my first diary in the second grade, I've had a passion expressing myself through writing. Later as a journalist and novelist, I realized words, if used powerfully, have the ability to touch, stir, and reach from the depths of one soul to another. Today as a writing and health coach, I inspire others to live their extraordinary life and encourage them to share their unique stories.
