Progress Over Perfection: Week 4 Add a Morning Workout Routine

The way you start your day can set your tone for the day. If you wake up late, your entire day may feel rushed and off. But if you intentionally start your day with a routine like self care or personal growth, going over your daily work and life schedule, and adding a workout, your day to be more productive and go smoother.

Why workout early in the day?

1.  More Energy
Working out first thing in the morning increases energy because you are delivering oxygen to your lungs and nutrients to your cells. This not only improves your physical health, but gives you the energy and motivation to get more things done earlier in your day.

2. More Focus
When you exercise, your brain gets a dopamine hit as well has an increase in norepinephrine and serotonin levels which affect focus and attention. As someone who struggles with A.D.D. project focus, working out early can actually help me focus so I can get more work done. “…Exercise works in much the same way as ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Adderall.” So working out first thing in the morning just makes sense.

3. Positive Attitude
Working out first thing in the morning can improve you mood and set your tone for the day. The endorphin chemicals in your brain that are released when exercising can make you less worried, happier, and more carefree so you can tackle a stressful day with ease. But don’t limit working out to the morning. Taking a walk at lunch or after work can be a great mood booster! In addition, I know first hand how moving my body and getting into action is like flipping a mindset switch. Whenever I feel negativity or depression trying to weigh me down, I go for a walk or turn on the music and I always feel better.

4. Healthy Eating Throughout the day
If you start your day with a workout, chances are you will make healthier food choices throughout the day. You will be be energized physically and have a positive outlook so that temptations won’t have the pull that they would if you skipped your workout.

So whether you turn on the music and dance, get out of the house for a walk, or do a cardio and weight session at the gym, working out first thing in the morning, or any time in the day, will improve all areas of your life.
