Christian Writers: body, mind, soul, spirit

This was part of a talk I did for the Fellowship of Christian Writers on November 11th.

As Christian writers, we have a burning message God has placed on our hearts to get out to the world. But how can we do that when we are so depleted physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually?

Having gone through this health journey and now coaching others to health, I know firsthand how physical health affects all the other areas of our health. If we’re not nourishing our bodies as God intended, we will not be performing at our best.

As Christian writers, I think we’re really good at nurturing the spirit man, but what about our physical and mental minds? It’s no secret that statistically writers are among some of the unhealthiest people. I’ve been guilty of spending 4-6 hours on the couch or bed writing and not moving, except for food or a bathroom break. Can anyone else relate? The nature of our business is sedentary.

And the last two years have seemed to make things worse. We’ve been isolated and stuck in our homes. Some of us have even been resigned to our current health conditions or complacent with the way things are.

We know that our bodies are the temple of the holy spirit and yet we don’t live and make choices that are honoring to the calling God has placed on our lives. I guess I should speak for myself, but I made choices in my life to comfort and gratify my flesh which Romans 13:14 warns us about.

Romans 12:1-2 says “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

I used food as comfort, but the poor nutrition I put into my body only left me feeling exhausted and unable to function and write the stories that God’s placed on my heart. I wasn’t being a good steward and ambassador of the temple he gave me. And so I was unable to do the things he’s called me to do. I was too mentally and physically exhausted to write.

What we put in our bodies not only affects our physical bodies but our minds as well. And if our minds are not operating at their peak, then that allows for satan and other lies to come in and take hold.

When our physical bodies are in pain or depleted of nutrients, it affects how we handle the day-to-day struggle? As writers, we have to deal with so much rejection. That takes mental and emotional strength, and when our physical body is tired and achy, that affects our witness to others and how we handle stress.

As Christian, many times we put others before ourselves, but how can we be our best selves and servants if we’re not showing up for ourselves?

My hope for you is that my journey and transformation may be the beginning of the renewal for someone else to fully walk in the calling of what it means to be a Christian writer, body, mind, soul, and spirit.

From the day I received my first diary in the second grade, I've had a passion expressing myself through writing. Later as a journalist and novelist, I realized words, if used powerfully, have the ability to touch, stir, and reach from the depths of one soul to another. Today as a writing and health coach, I inspire others to live their extraordinary life and encourage them to share their unique stories.
