Losing Weight While Eat Out

How do you eat out when you’re on a health plan and trying to lose weight?

Health is not about starving or depriving yourself of what you love. It’s about rethinking why you eat what you eat and making smart choices about what you put in your mouth. All that starts with changing you’re relationship and mindset about food which is where I start with my clients.

But if you’re trying to lose weight, and you’re going out to dinner or at a party how do you make the best choice?

1) First say NO to your trigger foods. I know if I have just one chip, cookie, or candy, it’s all over. Just saying NO to that bread basket, basket of chips, or adult beverage can save you from extra calories and food that is just going to make you feel bad.

2)   Make the best choice you can. Stick to delicious salads and grilled fish or chicken. You can even have a steak, but make sure it’s 5 oz and you cut the fat off.

3) Ask for a special order. Last night I went to a sushi restaurant and 95% of the meals came with rice. I must have looked over the menu for 15 minutes while people chatted around me. Since I was committed to low carbs to get my holiday weight off, there wasn’t much I was interested in. So I asked the waiter if I could substitute the rice in the sashimi bowl for salad and viola! A very delicious meal I could eat on my health program.

As the dinner progressed and the conversation went to health and weight loss, I heard someone say they “didn’t mind the extra 5-10 pounds they carried around” because they wanted to enjoy life. I also heard an opportunity for a mindset shift and a lot of justification for not getting healthy.

Why does overindulging have to equate to enjoying life? You can be healthy and fit, and enjoy your life. It starts with changing your mindset. I enjoy my life more now by being active, hiking, rock climbing, dancing all night, and I couldn’t do that with the extra 25 lbs I was carrying around.

You can still eat delicious food, enjoy that desert and adult beverage, but doing it every day only adds up to being unhealthy and lethargic. That doesn’t sound like a person enjoying their life, and honestly, if you keep it up, you will not be enjoying your future.

So go out to eat, enjoy your life, just be smart about your choices so you can enjoy your life and live it to the fullest longer.
