Progress Over Perfection: Week 2 Spend Quiet Time

For a healthy balanced life, it’s important to spend quiet time before you start your day. By getting still before you dive into your to-do list, you’re helping to set the mood for the day.

I’m so guilty of waking up in the morning and hitting the emails or social media to “work.” I have good intentions to spend time reading and in prayer, but if I don’t do them first thing after I grab my coffee and breakfast, it’s the first thing I forget and never get back to. When I don’t take time to pour into me through reading, prayer, and meditation, I feel like something is off. I might be super productive, but neglecting my spirit can leave me feeling empty or lacking something.

So how do you make quiet time and prayer a habit?

1. Establish a routine and stick to it. I coach my clients in the Cue-Reward technique. When I grab my coffee and my first fueling of the day, that is the time to open my bible and read, not get on my phone or computer.

2. Pick a quiet location. It’s best to keep the location in the same place to establish a routine. In the morning, I like to read on my couch. In the evening, it’s my bed. Having the same location also helps in the cue reward system.

3. Do a study. If you’re involved in a bible study, plan, or reading a book that requires contemplation, then it’s easier to remember to spend quiet time.

4. Begin or end each quiet time with prayer. Although I tend to pray as the spirit moves, it’s a good idea to begin or end each quiet time. It really doesn’t matter which as long as you make it a habit.
